How to View Art with a Toddler

Published by kdhetherly at 4:25 pm under Uncategorized Edit This

Yesterday, was an experience.  I am a member of a local moms’ group and I signed up for an event yesterday that I was soooo excited about.  It was a trip to the Orlando Art Museum for a tour for moms with babies.  This tour was the first of it’s kind so it was a little rocky at best.  Naturally, I am the only mom who brought a restless, napless, fearless toddler.  I’m not sure what I was thinking.  Anyway, the group coordinator who came up with the idea wanted to provide an opportunity for moms with small babies to explore the museum without the worry of crying babies disturbing other museum goers or being uncomfortable breastfeeding, etc.  And I think it is a great idea,  but it didn’t really go as she planned.  We basically stood in a circle for 15 minutes looking at a few paintings and listening while she explained some of the themes, artists ideals and history.  Well, at least I think that’s what she was doing.  I was too busy chasing after my 14 month old daughter who thought the wide open spaces of the museum were just perfect to practice running, falling, getting up and running again.  She’s also a bit of a performer, so each time she slipped from my grasp she liked to run into the center of the circle to garner a few smiles and “oh, isn’t she cute” comments. It probably didn’t help that I forgot the good stroller and only had my little Winnie the Pooh umbrella stroller which I’m sure for a toddler to spend 15 minutes in is a bit like flying coach in the center seat on a fully booked flight to Australia.  Our museum visit seemed to be cut short, but it was to my relief and I can’t help but wonder if we were the cause.  Either way, we made our way outside to the neighboring park for a photo session and tutorial with a talented local photographer.Again, during the tutorial I spent most of my time chasing my toddler around and pulling her off of one 5 month old  blue eyed bruiser repeatedly.  Luckily his mother was very welcoming to Jordan’s antics.  Even when she tried to touch his eyeballs…a new favorite obsession.  Having skipped our morning nap for this event, she was in that weird tired but wired state where just about anything can set them off even though they seem to be having the best time.  I was relieved when it was our turn for photos because it meant that we could skate outta there soon!  Of course, that meant that I had to once again pry her off of the bruiser for her little photo shoot.  She was less than happy.  I’m thinking what are the odds that my child decide to throw a fit during our free session (her sitting fee is normally $400).  Well, after a quick song of Itsy Bitsy Spider, we were somewhat back on track.  The photographer was able to capture a few shots.  As it turns out, the pics were fantastic and I see why people spend $400 on sitting fees for these pictures. So, in the end I think it is not possible to view art with a toddler.  Well, not under these circumstances anyway.  My mother would be proud of my attempts to saturate my daughter with a little culture, but disheartened at her lack of interest.  I guess it is too early to tell.
